After Valve’s claim to have a surprise in replace of their big presentation, many speculated that it could be anything from Episode 3, to Half-Life 3, to a new Source 2 engine. Instead, Gabe Newell announced Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3.
The PlayStation 3 version of the first person puzzle game will include Steamworks functionality, meaning the game will support Valve’s suite of support that features auto-updates, DLC releases, and possible cloud-based saving.
Newell’s announcement of a PlayStation 3 version also comes as a surprise. The former Microsoft producer stated in 2007 that developing for the console in general was “a waste of everybody's time,” and “a disaster on many levels... I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'.”
However, when Newell took the stage at Sony’s E3 press conference, he said that Sony, “has proved that the PS3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers.”
Portal 2 will be available in 2011 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac.
